Activity
You have been invited to an opening of a very special art gallery at your local museum. At this gallery they will be featuring two different kinds of paintings, still life paintings and abstract still life paintings. Before you are allowed to take the tour however the museum would like their guests to have a like background information. Check out the resource they have provided for you to learn more.
When you go to the site follow the following steps:
Activity 1 - Compare and Contrast
Use the Venn-Diagram maker on ReadWriteThink.org to compare and contrast the differences between William Harnett's painting and Juan Gris' painting. Include differences and similarities between the paintings subject, lighting, mood and how it made you feel.

Activity 2 - Create your own
Using a two 8 1/2"X11" white paper and your choice of medium (crayons, colored pencils, water colors etc.) design two different original works of art to feature in our classroom gallery!
When you go to the site follow the following steps:
- Find the painting in the upper left corner. Click on it.
- Follow the guide and explore the American artist William Harnett.
- Click on the link to compare William Harnett's still-life and Juan Gris' still-life
- Return to this page when you are finished.

- Find the materials needed.
- Search around your house and find three still-life objects. (hint: use what you learned from your venn-diagram to help you find your subject)
- Next, draw a still-life that is similar to William Harnett's painting. Use you venn-diagram to help guide your art.
- Using the same three still-life objects draw a still-life that is similar to Juan Gris's painting. How will this one be different from your first painting?
